It's a New Day Exhibition at Peterborough Cathedral

About

It's A New Day is an exhibition of paintings of sunrise scenes from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. They were created by artist and Baptist minister Revd Chris Duffett.

The paintings are a prayer for the United Kingdom, a prayer for what is to come, that out of the darkness comes a new day bringing a message of hope.

The process for this collection started during lockdown. Chris asked people on social media for photos of dawn scenes from the four nations of the UK. He chose four and used them as inspiration, praying as he painted.

Reflecting on the experience Chris said:

‘It felt like the scenes captured hope for tomorrow. The dawn paintings that flowed, I believe, began to represent the liminality that many of us find ourselves in. We don’t know what lies ahead and we find ourselves in a foreign land feeling like exiles who are not sure of the way home. The dawn pictures declare a new day, that while it yet can’t quite be seen, it is inevitable. I believe God brings hope as sure as there is a new day tomorrow. Dawn is a promise of a whole new day.’
