Butterfly

About

Join Peterborough Museum for a talk by Jamie Wildman, PhD researcher in Environmental Science at the University of Northampton in collaboration with Butterfly Conservation.

The chequered skipper butterfly Carterocephalus palaemon was first recorded in England in 1798. Between then and its extinction year, 1976, only one attempt to determine the true extent of the species’ distribution and abundance in England was made – by Lynne Farrell in her 1973 Preliminary report on the status of the chequered skipper (Pall.) in the British Isles. Using thousands of new records unavailable to Farrell, collated from labelled specimens, manuscripts, private diaries, anecdotal evidence, and other sources, we chart a course through 220 years of history, from the chequered skipper’s earliest known record at Clapham Park Woods to its last at Luffenham Heath and Ring Haw. Thanks to improved access to data from museum collections, private collectors, and researchers, we deepen understanding of the species in England, and tell the story of the historic rise and fall of one of Britain’s most beautiful butterflies.
