This Autumn Peterborough Mask Theatre will bring a dynamic duo of plays from the mind of one of Britain's most debonair playwrights; Noël Coward.
Following the success of their production of Twelfth Night in the open-air grounds of Peterborough Lido earlier this summer and the smash-hit Treasure Island back in 2022, the theatre group with a legacy of over 75 years of quality performances will share traditional and playful interpretations of Noël Coward's most notorious works of comedy, love and farce: Private Lives and Present Laughter.
Private Lives, described as Noël Coward's comedy of manners, follows a divorced couple that meet by chance at the same hotel while honeymooning with their new spouses. Will they behave honourably or will they behave disgracefully? With Noël Coward's acerbic wit we know there will be fireworks and possibly some very bad behaviour.
Present Laughter, based on a caricature of the author's real-life persona, follows a few days in the life of matinee idol Garry Essendine. Garry is suave, hedonistic and too old, says his wife, to be having numerous affairs. His line in harmless, infatuated debutantes is largely tolerated but just before he escapes on tour to Africa the full extent of his misdemeanours is discovered, and all hell breaks loose!
Both plays highlight the 1930s style and sophistication that Noël Coward had grown accustomed to. The Key Theatre studio is a perfect setting for audiences to experience the intimate nature of Coward's work, and revel in the tangled mess of joy, sorrow and charm that make these two plays so memorable, even almost 100 years after they were written. This opportunity to see not one but two of Coward's most iconic works is not to be missed!
Private Lives will be performed during 23rd-26th October 2024
Present Laughter will be performed 30th October - 2nd November 2024, with matinee performances on both Saturdays.
