Steven Grahl – Director

David Humphreys – Organ

Duruflé, Requiem
Maurice Duruflé’s sublime Requiem was commissioned by the Vichy government in 1941, completed in 1947 and is dedicated to the memory of Duruflé’s father. Despite being first performed in a secular setting, it is based on the timeless Gregorian chant of the Requiem Mass, leaving aside focussing on themes judgement, and instead focussing on peace and rest.

Mauersberger, Wie liegt die stadt so wüst
Rudolf Mauersberger was director of the Dresdner Kreuzchor from 1930 until his death in 1971. Wie liegt die Stadt so wüst takes its text from verses of the Lamentations of Jeremiah. The first performance was given in August 1945 in the ruins of the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross) with Mauersberger using a pile of rubble as a podium.

Bairstow, Lord, thou hast been our refuge
Written during WW1, Bairstow’s Lord, thou hast been our refuge is a powerful and stirring setting of words from the Psalms.

Howells, Take him, earth, for cherishing
Herbert Howells setting of Take him, earth, for cherishing is a ravishing and rarely-heard work, written to commemorate the death of John F Kennedy.

This the first time that the re-pitched Cathedral organ, at this stage 75% complete, will be used in concert.
