The dark truth behind the creator of the Railway Children

This December, local theatre company Peterborough Mask Theatre brings you ‘Edith in the Dark’ a surprising glimpse into the nightmarish inner world of celebrated children’s author Edith Nesbit.

Known for classic stories such as The Railway Children and Five Children and It, E.Nesbit might not be considered unusual at first glance, but there is much more to her story than meets the eye.

Playwright Philip Meeks uses the harrowing and dark events of Edith’s own life to retell the chilling horror stories that make up her earliest works. Terrifying and unremitting, these tales are quite a departure from the cosy childhood books for which she is loved.

Mask Theatre invites you to join Edith in her attic room, where someone is hiding a deadly secret.
Director Helen McCay who brought us Mask Theatre’s award winning Pillowman in 2017 (another macabre and twisty tale) tells us:
“So many of us grew up with The Railway Children as a bedtime staple, but know so little about the person behind the creation, or that she churned out horror stories to support her family. This play turns the tables and makes Edith herself the subject of a horror story’
Edith in the Dark features Emma Goldberg playing the part of Edith, Emma says; “It’s been utterly fascinating getting into the brilliant and obviously troubled mind of Edith. The play itself is full of the unexpected, there are some real moments of intrigue!”
Edith in the Dark runs from Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th December at the Undercroft in Serpentine Green Shopping Centre, Hampton, Peterborough, at 7:30pm, tickets are £10 and are available at the Eastern Angles Box Office 01473 211498 and online.
